Onions:  They Stink Up My Life

They are slimy and slippery...as soon as I bite into something of which they are contained I immediately feel the bile rising up in my throat.  They are pungent, and their odor can fill an entire house!  What is this I speak of you ask?  The culprit could be only one thing...ONIONS!

Ever since I was a little girl, I have absolutely detested onions.  They are a vegetable that I just can’t bear to even be in the same room with.  The problem is, onions aren’t a rare food, like rutabaga or plantains.  Onions are a key ingredient to many different recipes, including the recipe for a serious stomach ache for me.

Texture:  The first reason I can’t stand onions is their texture.  The feel of that slick, slimy, slippery slice of onion raises the vomit deep in the pit of my stomach.  As soon as I feel an onion on my tongue I want to puke.  I just can’t stand the feeling of an onion in my mouth, cooked or raw.

Taste:  I also hate onions because of the taste that they encompass.  The taste of them is very sharp, and overpowers the flavours of everything else in the dish.  Have you ever ordered a pizza, and looked so forward to the taste of cheesy, hot, saucy goodness, opened the box, carefully selected the perfect slice, and then bit into that piece of perfection to only find it had been tainted by the godawful flavour of the onion?  Oh the horror!  This has happened to me multiple times, and completely turned me off of pizza entirely.

Smell:  In my worst nightmares I am locked in a room with a bag of onions, a stove, a frying pan, and a mean chef that just continuously chops, slices, and sautes those viciously smelling vegetables.  Raw or cooked, although different, their smell is so pungent.  It gets inside your nasal cavity and festers there, overpowering all of your other senses, causing actual tears to come to your eyes.  After being around onions I smell them for at least three days!

They are the Ultimate Ingredient:  Unfortunately for me, onions are found in everything!  Pizza sauce, pasta sauce, soups, salads, casseroles, and the list continues.  Onions are the household ingredient, and are considered part of the holy trinity of cooking.  Even if they are minced to the point of juice, I can still find little slivers throughout the dish, and as soon as I do, I push my plate away.  The dish has been ruined forever!  I will not longer eat it, look at it, smell it or touch it within my free will.  I will starve to death before I willingly place a bite of anything containing onions in my mouth.

I hope I have shed some light on the absolute horror that onions bring me, and have explained all of the reasons why you should stay away from these seemingly harmless vegetables.  They have the capacity to destroy your meal, your tastebuds, and all of your culinary dreams!  Stay away...FAR away!
