Wed, Feb 18th

The kids were amazing in their presentation of the Ash Wednesday Mass...very reverent and respectful.  They set a quiet and solemn tone for the whole school.  Go Comets!

Science:  Read Pages 12-13 and make notes on tension,compression, and bending and breaking.

Recent Happenings in 5R

We have been doing some neat things in our room as of late...

Math:  The three part math lessons are going well, and the kids love them!  They enjoy working with a "Math  Pal," and try so hard to create a piece during the "work on it" portion of the lesson  that will qualify them for "consolidation."  They have been benefiting from some different strategies we have been using including "Decimal of the Day,"  a number line I've put up in our classroom, place value charts, etc...



Literacy:  
Guided/Independent Reading:  For twenty minutes a day I have been reading with small groups at the back table and while reading, focusing on the reading strategy (IE:  predicting, connections, summarizing) that we are currently working on.  As the rest of the class reads independently, our small group is discussing and learning the strategy on a more small scale level, which allows for better and more focused student learning.  As far as independent reading goes, books must be read by Feb 20th, and then students will be creating book reports "book in a box."  Outline will be posted soon.







Summarizing:  We read a mentor text "Malala," and summerized her story as a class.  From there we created an anchor chart on how to create an effective summary.  Our next step was to divide into small groups of two or three and choose a mentor text to work with.  We then, in our groups, read our mentor text and summerized it on chart paper.  The next class, the summaries were posted.  We rotated around the room, perusing the different summaries and sticky noting different strategies or elements we thought were effective on each one.  We then highlighted the most effective summaries.
I signed my students up on the newsela website and earmarked articles that are appropriate for their grade level/reading level.  Students will be going on the website from the ipads and choosing articles they are interested in, then summarizing them.  At the end of the unit, they will choose 3 summaries for submission for evaluation.





Writing:  We will be working on sentence fluency and making existing texts more interesting.  We will then get into writing and presenting speeches!

Science:  As part of our forces and structures units the students will be creating bridges out of popsicle sticks, showcasing different scientific elements they have learned.


Religion:  We are currently practising our Ash Wed Mass.

Phys-Ed:  Basketball is awesome, and the kids are loving the mini tournaments

Art:  This month we have completed one point perspective pieces, and patterning pieces.
