Today

Today was a blast.

We headed to St. Clair for 9:45. We hit the gym first. Ball hockey, soccer, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, and some free time.

Next we headed to the pool. It was a diving fiesta!  We had a blast swimming and playing.

We had a pizza and juice picnic, then played capture the flag around the pond.

We headed back to school for a surprise water balloon fight and freezies.

Tomorrow is our auction and sadly the last day...

I am so going to miss my munchkins....

Our Year: A Slideshow

I created a slideshow for the students of pictures and footage of some of the things we have done throughout the year.  We viewed it on Thursday.  In the past, I have burned it on CD or DVD and have given each child a copy.  Some people have had a hard time viewing  it on their home devices for whatever reason.  If you would prefer me to save it on a memory stick for you, just to ensure it works at home for you, please send your child with a memory stick.  I will save it for you, as well as sending your child home with a CD/DVD copy.

I tried to post it here, but I guess I'm just not that tech savvy yet...

Thanks!!

The Last Few Days

Well, last week of posts...

Ugh, I am struggling with losing this phenomenal group of kids...but as they say, "The show must go on!"

The Grade 5s presented their fractured fairytale plays that they independently wrote, directed, and starred in, with no assistance.  There were a few hiccups along the way, with some kids absent, and some stepping in and taking over, but overall the performances were great!  I am so proud of them for working together on their own and creating a product that they can be proud of.

The dances were awesome too!  I love watching the kids embrace their creativity, and step out of their comfort zone.  Life is so much better when you are having FUN!!

The visit from the Mayor was spectacular.  Photos are below.  Regardless of our political beliefs or opinions, Mayor Dilkens was very professional and took the students so seriously.  He treated them just as he would any of his constituents.  Councillor Francis was just as wonderful with the kids.  The kids were extremely serious, and Mayor Dilkens said "Wow, the students at Christ the King were the most polite and asked the most serious questions."  CBC News was there to report...and WE MADE IT ON THE 5 o'CLOCK NEWS!!!

My apologies for not posting...this week has been insane,,. and we haven't had homework.

I'll leave my final thank-yous and farewells for later this week...

The Great Provincial Debate

Provincial Government in Grade 5

So...in 5R we always tend to take it to the next level...so when learning about the Ontario Legislature, we decided we should research a political party and have a debate.

Step 1:  We found reliable websites and researched the parties.

Step 2:  We pledged a party.

Step 3:  We researched the party's platform.

Step 4:  We elected a leader of each party and began writing a speech

Step 5:  We researched the other party's weaknesses and planned to point them out to the class.

Step 6:  We made posters, cheers, and planned our outfits.

Step 7:  We held the debate

Step 8:  We voted on ballots

Step 9:  We elected a winner!

A Visit From the Mayor...

This may be one of the "coolest" events that have occurred in my 10 years of teaching...

THE MAYOR IS COMING TO VISIT OUR CLASSROOM!

I am not kidding.  June 16th.  9:10 AM.  All parents are invited.  I can't believe it!

Fred Francis (Ward 1) and Hilary Payne (Ward 9) have also committed to visiting us too.  I am trying to schedule them to come the 16th as well.

I just bought a giant Canadian Flag at Zehrs...

I am so excited!  As a teacher it is very challenging to make learning about government interesting...but THIS is cool...

I am asking the students to wear dress clothes (dresses, black dress pants, white shirts, red ties, anything along those lines) in order to present ourselves as professional.

I am also going to let ctv and cbc know about Mayor Dilkens' visit, as well as the Windsor Star.

EEEEEKKKK!!!  I am so pumped for the kids!

Government Update:

We have been studying government for the last few weeks, and I have some exciting news to report.

We figured out which wards we live in in the city, and we emailed our councillors to request a visit for them to come and speak to us.  Hillary Payne and Fred Francis already got back to us!  We will be setting up these visits soon.  The kids were so excited to get email from their councillors!  Some of the kids emailed the Mayor and are currently waiting for a response.

We are now studying provincial government.  We have researched the four major parties, and have all pledged a party.  We have elected leaders for each party, and are researching issues to discuss in an upcoming debate.

Here are a few pictures:

Homework and Curriculum Update

Only 5 weeks left!  Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

No homework tonight.

Math:  We are currently working on Chapter 8:  Fractions.  We are currently working on Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers.  After fractions our last mini unit is money.

Reading:  We just finished evaluating and will begin synthesizing soon.

Writing:  We will be writing biographies of people that inspire us in the upcoming weeks.  We will be focusing on text features.

Media:  We just finished creating commercials and packaging to promote a new and unique healthy product.

Social Studies:  We just finished local government, and have just begun provincial government.  The kids are loving this.  We have researched the four main political parties, and have chosen one that we wish to belong to.  From here we will break into our parties and choose a leader.  We will research issues that are real life political issues and hold our own debate.

We emailed our local councillors and mayor about some issues and/or made requests for them to visit our class and talk about their jobs.  Fred Francis and Hillary Payne have already replied!  The kids are loving it!

Phys-Ed:  Aerobics and the beep test.

Arts:  We will be performing fractured fairy tales from the scripts that we just wrote.

Measuring Mass

In Science we were studying matter, and the mass of different types of matter.  We created different mixtures and solutions, and studied their masses as individual ingredients, and then as a complete mixture.  The kids had a great time using the balance scales and the weights!

Birthdays in 5R
When it is your birthday in our class, we dress you up for the occasion!  Here is Grace in her birthday outfit!

 Earth Day!

The Grade 5s were out and about on Earth Day, travelling the neighbourhood and picking up garbage throughout the neighbouring streets, as well as the school yard.  We filled two huge bags!
Upon our return, we watched a video on Earth Day, and then finished up our afternoon creating our own Earth Day posters.  Save the Earth!
